Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
Ever wanted to run a copy of Windows inside Windows? No? What if there's a really good game or app that you've heard about, but don't want to download it because it might come with malware?
What you need is a virtual machine.
A virtual machine allows you to run a separate OS inside your main OS.
There are two main (free) virtual machine apps:
VMware Player
Microsoft Virtual PC
I recommend Virtual PC 2007 - It's what I'm writing this blog post in.
If you chose VMware:
Download some empty virtual disks and then search the net for more help. VMware requires lots of setting up.
If you chose Virtual PC:
Open up Virtual PC.
Click the "New" button on the Virtual PC console
A wizard will pop up. Just tell it to make a new virtual disk (not an existing one), select the OS you plan to run, etc.
Insert your Windows\Linux\Other OS disk and boot the VM
OR: if you have an ISO image of the disk, right click the little CD icon on the virtual pc window and choose 'capture iso image'. Restart the VM by pressing ALT GR + DEL.
The setup interface for the OS will open in the VM.
Remember: If you format the virtual disk, it will not affect the real disk.
